Portland is 0-5 on their 6-game roadtrip

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder used a 4-run seventh inning to rally back and beat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-3 on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. Portland has lost their second straight series and falls to 0-5 on their 6-game roadtrip.

Anthony Claggett (1-0) made his Double-A debut for the Thunder and earned the win despite allowing the go-ahead runs. Portland trailed 2-1 but scored twice in the seventh inning thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Carlos Mendoza.

Miguel Ascencio (1-2) yielded four hits and four runs in just 2/3 of an inning to take the loss for the Sea Dogs.

J.B. Cox worked a perfect ninth to notch his first save since 2006 (missed the entire 2007 season due to Tommy John surgery).

John Otness produced all three unearned runs for Portland. Otness grounded out to third base in the fifth inning but Bubba Bell scored from third on an errant throw from the first baseman. The Portland catcher reached on Mendoza's throwing error in the seventh, scoring Bell and Iggy Suarez.

Portland led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but Trenton scored four times off Ascencio. Colin Curtis tied the game with an RBI single. Edwar Gonzalez, who was making his Double-A debut, delivered the game-winning hit with a 2-run double down the left-field line. Jose Tabata greeted Chad Rhoades with an RBI single to right field for the game’s final run.

Kris Johnson worked 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs (both unearned). Curtis blasted a 2-run homer in the third inning with two outs - giving Trenton an early 2-0 advantage.

Jason Jones lowered his ERA to 2.19, working six strong innings for the Thunder on five hits and one unearned run.

The two teams combined for seven errors - four came in the seventh inning.

Iggy Suarez and Andrew Pinckney each had two hits for the Sea Dogs, who dropped to 17-11 on the season. Trenton improved to 18-12 and 12-7 at Waterfront Park.
