Habitat for Humanity: The Portland Sea Dogs front office staff and Slugger took time out of their schedule on January 4th to help in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house. The Sea Dogs spent the day installing hard wood floors at the 55 Mallily Road site in Portland.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland (HFHGP) is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian homebuilding organization. Habitat for Humanity is committed to the elimination of substandard housing by building simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with people in need. Habitat works in partnership with people in need and community support to provide an opportunity for low-income families to realize the benefits and the blessings of home ownership. Habitat homeowners are required to log 500 hours of sweat equity which becomes the families’ down payment on their Habitat house. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Save Our Bases: In May 2005, Mainers learned that the B.R.A.C. Commission had listed two of Maine’s Military Bases (Brunswick Naval Air Station and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard) on the Closure and Re-alignment list. Upon hearing the news the Sea Dogs sprung into action hosting a Save Our Bases Night on June 22nd. During the month leading up to the game, 50% of the ticket sales from that game were donated to the task forces committed to keeping the bases open. Supporters wore their yellow shirts to the game, fans received Save Our Bases pennants and signed a banner that was sent on to the B.R.A.C. Commission asking them to reconsider their decision. Maine’s Governor along with representatives from each base threw out ceremonial first pitches and God Bless America replaced Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the 7th inning stretch. More than $8,000 was raised and in August Mainers learned that one of the bases has indeed been saved.
Hot Stove Tour: Every January the Sea Dogs embark on a week long journey traveling throughout Maine and New Hampshire visiting schools, hospitals, civic organizations, and malls. Making the journey are a Sea Dogs player, the teams manager, front office personnel and of course Slugger. The tour is designed to get fans thinking about baseball in the thick of winter and to thank fans for their past support. The tour concludes with a dinner open to the public on Friday night.
