In 2005, the Portland Sea Dogs were awarded FAME’s “Education at Work for Maine” award. This award is presented to an organization that significantly contributes to the education of Maine students. By hosting various events in combination with education, an internship program and by actively participating in the community, the Portland Sea Dogs make it a priority to be a positive and strong influence in the Portland community. Below are some of the education based programs the Sea Dogs host throughout the year.  For more information on any of these programs please contact the Portland Sea Dogs at 207-874-9300.
“School Night at the Ballpark” Schools throughout Maine and New Hampshire may choose to purchase tickets for their students at the lowest possible discounted rate. Depending on the ticket option selected, schools become eligible to either sing the National Anthem or Take Me Out to the Ballgame or select a participant to throw out the ceremonial first-pitch of the game. Schools that qualify may also request a Sea Dogs player come visit their school to talk about the importance of education, saying no to drugs and alcohol and what it is like to be a professional athlete.  This program is sponsored by the NextgenCollege Investing Plan.
Most Improved Student: In keeping with the tradition of years past, the Portland Sea Dogs and Maine’s NextGen College Investing Plan have teamed up to honor area students for being their classes "Most Improved Student". The program is open to students in grades K-12. Each teacher may nominate one student from his or her classroom. The student selected receives a complimentary ticket to a game and is presented a certificate from the Sea Dogs recognizing their accomplishment. The students are recognized in a pre-game ceremony and have their name displayed on the outfield scoreboard

Summer Reading Program: This program encourages children to put down the remote and pick up a book.  As an incentive, each child that signs up for the program will receive a voucher for one free child’s admission to a Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field. Libraries in Maine and New Hampshire may submit requests to receive free ticket vouchers to hand out to any child that participates in their summer reading program to help encourage reading. This program is sponsored by Oakhurst Dairy.

Kevin MacDonald Scholarship: The Portland Sea Dogs are proud to support and honor the memory of Kevin MacDonald an excellent student, leader and athlete. This scholarship recognizes recent high school graduates from Portland based high schools that have excelled both on the baseball diamond and in the classroom. Leadership, sportsmanship and academic achievement are the criteria used in determining the scholarship winners. This scholarship is made possible through the Eastern League and the Overhead Door Corporation.

Nextgen College Investing Plan “Field of Dreams” Scholarship: The Sea Dogs in conjunction with Nextgen College Investing Plan have teamed up to make possible $1,000 scholarships. Students are asked to respond to an essay question and the winners are picked based on their responses. These winners are chosen from hundreds of students across the state.

High School Night of Champions:   Each season the Sea Dogs invite all the High School State Champions from all sports from all seasons to attend a game and be honored on the field prior to a Portland Sea Dogs game.  This program is sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods.
